Vizianagaram Medical College Project

The much-awaited project of the Andhra Pradesh government to establish a Medical College in Vizianagaram is expected to be completed by the end of March, said Minister for Health and Family Welfare V Rajini while reviewing the work progress of the college.

The announcement was made when she visited the construction site of the medical college to note the work progress on Monday. Apart from announcing the expected date of the completion of the new medical college, she also added that admissions and regular classes would commence from the next academic year.

The academic session will start right after the completion of the medical college with 150 seats for MBBS students, said Minister Rajini. She also mentioned that the progress of the work is going at a brisk pace.

As per a media report in The Hans India, the Minister said that “17 medical colleges are under construction and once they start functioning, the public would get high-class medical facilities free of cost.”

The team had earlier reported that Dr. NTR University of Health Sciences gave its nod for commencing academic activities in five new medical colleges of the State from the next academic year 2023-24. Therefore, medical colleges at Eluru, Vizianagaram, Rajamahendravaram, Nandyal, and Machilipatnam districts of the State will commence the MBBS admission process in 150 MBBS seats each.

Before the approval, a Government Order (GO) was issued by the AP government for the creation of 3,530 posts for five new medical colleges and teaching hospitals across the state.

The notification in this regard was issued by Chief Secretary M Ravi Chandra, Health, Medical and Family Welfare Department. The State Cabinet had given its approval to create 3,530 posts for the 5 new medical colleges at the rate of 706 posts for each one.

As per the GO, each of the five medical colleges were given 222 posts and each affiliated teaching hospital got 484 posts in compliance with the National Medical Commission (NMC) norms.

Earlier in May 2021, the state government sanctioned Rs 500 crore for the construction of the 500-bedded medical college hospital on 70 acres of land at Garjularega, on the outskirts of Vizianagaram.

Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy, who virtually laid the foundation stone for the project, told TH that the new hospital would provide treatment at par with corporate hospital standards.

Deputy Chief Minister Pamula Pushpa Srivani, Vizianagaram MP Bellana Chandrasekhar, MLAs Sambangi Venkata China Appala Naidu, Alajangi Jogarao, and MLC Penumatsa Suresh Babu thanked the Chief Minister for sanctioning a medical college to Vizianagaram.
