Pune: A renowned orthodontist and one of the founders of Satara Hills Marathon, Dr. Sandeep Lele lost his life in a dreadful accident which took place on the Pune Satara highway after the doctor's cycle crashed into a truck on the highway.

The unfortunate incident took place on Saturday around 8:15 in the morning near a toll booth on the outskirts of Satara city, when Dr. Lele was returning home along with his companions after cycling for 50 km. While on his way back home, Dr. Lele's cycle hit the rear of a truck which was ahead of him and halted all of a sudden. This led to serious head injuries to the doctor. Dr. Lele was rushed to a hospital but succumbed during the treatment, reports PTI.

However, Dipak Thorat, a paediatrician who was cycling along with Dr. Lele claimed that Lele was cycling alongside a partner with his head down for ease of cycling.

"Lele failed to see the truck parked ahead of him. His speed was slow as he was cycling on a slope but hit hard resulting in twisting his head and neck," he added.

He further stated that the doctor's cervical vertebrae got damaged, resulting in blocking his breathing. "We lost him within minutes," he expressed.

Though the ambulance arrived within minutes from the toll Naka and he was rushed to a hospital in Satara within time but failed to survive, he added.

"We were cycling like usual to prepare for an upcoming triathlon scheduled to be held in November at Goa. However, soon after the toll Naka, there was the elevation where Lele was cycling," Thorat told Pune Mirror.

Expressing condolence, another friend, Dilip Pol, posted on social media and said that Lele was known to be a jovial person and high spirited. Pol said that he knew Lele as a strong and humble person with a passion for cycling, sports and an active participant of the half marathon.

Sandeep Lele, an athlete and an orthodontist by profession was also a very active member within the athletic community.
