New Delhi: Candidates applying for Teachers Eligibility Qualification (TEQ) Certificates will need to pay the application fees twice or more than that if they submit additional certificates after the submission of initial applications, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has clarified.

The Commission issued such directions as it referred to the fact that after submitting the initial applications, several applicants requested NMC to reconsider their decision later as they submitted additional certificates later.

Doctors interested in pursuing their careers as medical teachers need to submit their applications for TEQ certificates to the Commission. Following this, the Postgraduate Medical Education Board (PGMEB) of the Commission issues the certificates in compliance with the "Teachers Eligibility Qualification in Medical Institution Regulations, 2022".

Issuing a notice yesterday, the PG Board of NMC addressed the issue and pointed out that "It has been observed that applicants submit the additional certificates obtained by them after submission of the initial application and request for reconsideration of the earlier decision of National Medical Commission."

In this regard, the Commission mentioned about its decision to demand fees twice if the candidates submit deficient qualification/experience/publication after the initial applications.

NMC mentioned in the public notice dated 01.12.2023, "It has been decided that in future all such cases while making any request applicants have to submit the requisite fee again if the deficient Qualification/Experience/ Publication has been obtained after submission of initial application."

Last year, NMC released the TEQ Regulations 2022 via a gazette issued by the NMC's PG Medical Education Board. Enforceable from February 14th of 2022, these regulations laid down the fundamentals for standardising recruitment of doctors towards their entry into medical academia.

According to the rules, appointment and promotion of faculty in various teaching specialities imparting graduate and postgraduate medical education in medical institutions, falling within the purview of the National Medical Commission, has to be in accordance with the minimum qualifications and experience prescribed in these Regulations, so as to maintain a standard of teaching in medical institutions.

These TEQ rules specify the number of patterns starting with who can be classified as a medical teacher, while also specifying a number of courses that doctors will now have to clear to be eligible for various faculty posts.

  • Norms for appointing faculty in medical institutions
  • Rules to determine the equivalent qualification of DNB with MD/MS and DM/MCh
  • Eligibility required to be designated as a postgraduate guide
  • Norms for appointing faculty and their promotions
  • Determining teaching designations for Consultants/Specialists for constituting a medical college or commencing a postgraduate course
  • Determining the teaching designations for Consultants/Specialists in Medical Institutions of Defence Services
  • Rules for appointing visiting faculties
