Srinagar:The medical fraternity is mourning the tragic loss of a young interndoctorat theSher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS), Srinagar, who allegedly passed away after contracting an infection while serving patients on duty. The doctor was just months away from beginning his post-graduation. According to news reports, the deceased, identified as Dr Tariq-ul-Islam, had reportedly been unwell for the past few days but continued to treat patients despite his worsening health. His blood pressure dropped severely, and his heart failed, following which he could not be saved. A Facebook post detailing the incident mentioned that Dr Tariq had been feeling well for a couple of weeks but couldn’t take leave. He continued his duties until 2 a.m., when his condition suddenly worsened. He was brought to the emergency room in pain and distress. On examination, his blood pressure was found to be very low, and signs of heart failure were visible on cardiac sonography. He was immediately shifted to SKIMS for advanced cardiac care, but unfortunately, it was too late. The user described him as a hardworking student and urged other medicos to prioritise their health over duties. He said that doctors may not fight on the battlefield with guns, but they fight silent battles every day against pain, disease, and death — often with little protection, recognition, or reward. The doctor also pointed out that Dr Tariq was paid only Rs 12,000 per month, calling it a sad reflection of how undervalued medical interns are. The Jammu and Kashmir Students Association (JKSA) expressed deep sorrow over Dr Tariq’s untimely demise. "Dr Tariq was admired for his dedication, humility, and compassionate nature. He served with sincerity and touched countless lives with his warmth and kindness. His sudden departure has left a profound void in the hearts of his friends, teachers, and the entire medical community. In this moment of sorrow, we stand in solidarity with his bereaved family and colleagues. May Almighty Allah forgive his shortcomings, elevate his status in Jannah, and grant patience and strength to his loved ones to bear this irreparable loss," said the association. The SKIMS management also paid tribute on X, stating, "Dr Tariq-ul-Islam’s untimely demise is an irreparable loss, and his promising future and commitment to the medical profession will always be remembered with deep respect. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and pray for eternal peace for the departed souls." Meanwhile, Dr Mohammad Momin Khan, National Executive of FAIMA and Vice President of AIMSA, expressed deep grief over the incident. He said, "FAIMA Doctors Association and AIMSA express deep grief on the passing of Dr Tariq-ul-Islam, Intern at SKIMS Medical College.
