In a major boost to medical education in India, the Union Cabinet has approved Phase-III of the Centrally Sponsored Scheme to add over 10,000 new medical seats, including 5023 MBBS and 5000 PG medical seats, in government-run medical institutes, by 2028-29. With a total outlay of Rs 15,034.50 crore, the initiative will expand opportunities for aspiring doctors, ensure more specialists, and strengthen healthcare access in underserved regions. According to the statement issued by the Centre, the Union Cabinet chaired by the Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, has approved the Phase-Ill of the Centrally Sponsored Scheme (CSS) for strengthening and upgradation of existing State Government/ Central Government Medical Colleges/ Standalone PG Institutes/ Government Hospitals for increasing 5,000PG seatsand extension of the CSS for upgradation of existing government medical colleges for increasing 5,023MBBSseats with an enhanced cost ceiling of Rs 1.50 crore per seat.
