New Delhi: Day after releasing the guidelines for the MBBS internship posting, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has withdrawn its advisory notice from its website.
The said advisory dated May 10, 2021, with the title- 'Guidelines for MBBS internship Posting' issued under the authority of Dr Aruna V. Vanikar, President, Under Graduate Medical Education Board at NMC, primarily restricted MBBS graduates' externship to 'exceptional situations'.
It had come in view of several queries received by the apex medical regulator concerning the March 31st order wherein the NMC allowed that the medicos can do their internship (popularly known as externship) at other NMC recognised medical colleges.
The NMC had clarified, "Internship is the responsibility of the medical college that has trained the medical graduate. Every intern has to approach the corresponding medical colleges with regards to internship related issues." Further, on the matter of externship, the NMC internship guidelines clearly stated:
1. Internship should be completed in the medical colleges where the medical graduates completed final MBBS.
2. Mutual transfer of internship is possible only under exceptional situations. Mutual transfer will be only between government medical colleges or only between private medical colleges. No intern can exchange between private and government colleges or vice versa.

However, now this NMC advisory stands null and void as it has been revoked by the authorities from the regulator's official website.
Confirming the effect to The Times of India, an official from the Maharashtra University of Health Sciences (MUHS) said that they got a mail withdrawing the May 10 advisory on Wednesday evening. Further, an MBBS graduate, said that if all the students are graduating from colleges affiliated to MUHS and are taking the same exam, there should not be any discrimination after they graduate, especially when we are in a pandemic and government hospitals need more doctors. Students should be allowed to take up internships closer home, based on the requirement.
The clarification to this effect was seen in a notice issued by the West Bengal Medical Council as well, in which, the Registrar confirmed that the order is no longer available on the NMC's website and asked the WBUHS to ensure proper compliance at its affiliated medical colleges. The notice stated, "National Medical Commission has withdrawn its May 10-2021 order restricting MBBS graduates from Private Medical Colleges to pursue their internship from Government Colleges and vice-versa, vide the order published in their official website"
Meanwhile, but the notice is no longer visible on the website.
Following the earlier order, the MBBS graduates had already started the procedure to register themselves with the medical colleges; but now the medicos are concerned whether this would mean a halt in their registration process.
