Incident of Ragging at Guntur Medical College

An incident of ragging allegedly took place at Guntur Medical College recently, where a first-year MBBS student was asked to wear formal dress during night time in the boys' hostel.

This incident allegedly took place on March 16, only a few days after the first-year MBBS students joined their classes, adds Deccan Chronicle.

The issue came to light after the victim lodged a complaint with the Anti-Ragging Helpline of the National Medical Commission, the apex medical body.

However, the college has not yet been able to get access to the students who were allegedly subjected to ragging, as NMC has kept the identity of the medico a secret.

As per the latest media report by Deccan Chronicle, after the NMC helpline received a complaint of ragging, where a first-year student had to wear formal dress during the night, the Commission directed the Principal of the GMC to furnish details.

Following this, the anti-ragging committee of the medical college probed the matter and on March 17, it asked the students for obtaining the details of ragging, and especially about the students who were subjected to it along with the students who were involved in doing so.

However, the students allegedly didn't disclose any details regarding the matter or those who participated in it.

The college authorities have also organized a counselling for the students warning of the consequences of participating in such activities and how their academic career would be affected for being involved in such unlawful practice of ragging especially in educational institutes.

While commenting on the matter, the principal of the GMC, Dr. Padmavathi Devi said, "No student in our college complained about being subjected to ragging except for NMC communication that a first-year MBBS student was subjected to ragging by some senior students at Boys' Hostel on March 16. We have called the students and their parents and inquired about it and provided counselling to them."

Speaking to The Hans India, the Principal said, "We have stepped up security at the men's hostel to check ragging in the hostel. Steps were being taken to avoid meeting of seniors and juniors at the mess also. Anti-ragging committee members are frequently visiting the men's hostel and inquiring the situation in the hostel. We have already set up Closed Circuit Cameras at the men's hostel of the GMC."

"We have sent photos and details of the Anti-ragging committee, photos of their meeting with students, meeting videos, anti-ragging committee members' visit to men's hostel and their meeting with the students also sent to the anti-ragging help desk. We have taken all the steps to check ragging in the GMC."
