Mumbai: In a major relief to a resident doctors from GMCH Nagpur who previously failed to appear for the examination after he tested COVID positive, the Maharashtra University of Health Sciences (MUHS) decided to conduct a re-examination under one time special provision made by the authorities.
MUHS examination controller Dr. Ajith Pathak confirmed that the University made special provision for the student who was a front-line Covid warrior.
However, Pathak clarified that "This special provision is a one-time measure for summer 2020 examinations only for those students who have appeared for theory, and tested Covid positive before their practical examinations."
According to a recent media report in TOI, the medico who is a resident doctor from PG (ortho) was tested positive on September 6th, just one day before the examination. Following the protocol, he was not allowed to appear for the examination and had to go under mandatory quarantine in spite of being present on the campus. Both the authorities of MUHS and DMER assured him via phone that an examination will be conducted once the candidate recovers from the infection.
A few days ago the doctor was tested covid negative after which GMCH Dean wrote to MUHS requesting them to make necessary arrangements to conduct the examination of the medico. Previously there was no such provision available in the act; hence, the authorities had to create a special one-time provision by passing an independent resolution.
The authorities decided to conduct the examination at GMCH Nagpur on Monday.

Dr. Pathak informed Times of India, " This special provision is a one-time measure for summer 2020 examination is only for those students who have appeared for theory and tested COVID positive before the practical examinations."
He further added " we formulated SOPs and submitted to chancellor Bhagat Singh Koshyari. We got approval from our board of examination too. Therefore we are conducting practical examinations."
The Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors president for GMCH Nagpur, Dr. Arpit Dhakate told the daily that the health University has taken the initiative to make the provisions after taking into consideration the dedication and work of the resident doctors amidst the pandemic. He also informed that " three such residents had filed a petition in the High Court and asked for the re-examination. Finally, we got justice clarified."
The residents previously threatened to go on strike if the authority doesn't allow them the chance to appear for a re-examination. "Three such residents had filed petition in the High court and asked for the re-examination. Finally, we got justice," Dhakate told the daily.
Now that the authorities have decided to arrange re-examination, which will indeed bring relief to the medicos who could not appear for the exams after being infected.
