Madhya Pradesh- With an aim to improve coordination and efficiency in health and medical education, the Madhya Pradesh Cabinet chaired by Chief Minister Dr Mohan Yadav approved the merger of the Public Health and Family Welfare Department and the Medical Education Department.
Following this merger, the department will be known as the Department of Public Health and Medical Education. The merger of both the departments was recommended in the roadmap of Atmanirbhar Madhya Pradesh.
Following the cabinet decision on Tuesday, the state government issued a press release stating that the merger decision is set to bring several benefits.
“Medical colleges will be able to focus on critical/specialised treatment and medical education instead of providing routine medical services. Effective monitoring of infant mortality and maternal mortality will be easier. The best practices of medical colleges can be used in health centres. It will become easier to affiliate district hospitals with medical colleges. There will be facilities for better implementation and control of health policy and departmental schemes”, stated the release

Along with this merger, the cabinet has also approved amendments to the provisions of the Madhya Pradesh Medical University Act, 2011 in order to expand its scope in medical education. Presently, the University of Medical Sciences offers courses in Medicine, Dentistry, Nursing, Ayurveda, Unani, Homeopathy, Naturopathy etc.
Keeping in view the increase in the number of nursing and paramedical institutions and students, the University of Medical Sciences will offer courses in subjects other than nursing and paramedical. Courses related to nursing and paramedical subjects will be conducted through other universities established under the Higher Education Department.
