Raipur: Doctor's License Suspended by Chhattisgarh Medical Council

Chhattisgarh Medical Council has suspended the license of a doctor for three months after finding him guilty of treating a patient with anaesthesia without the requisite registered qualification of an anesthesiologist.

As per the Medical Council order, the doctor has an MBBS degree, but despite not having the additional qualifications of an anesthesiologist, he has been found guilty of treating the patient in that discipline. Therefore, the medical license of the doctor has been suspended from October 11 to January 10, 2023. The doctor was serving at Shaheed Hospital, Dalli-Rajhara.

Another doctor of the facility has also been barred from practising for the next three months under similar charges of treating a patient without valid qualification, according to a recent report by Jagran.

This order has been issued by Chhattisgarh Medical Council's President Bhim Singh.

Case Background

The case relates to a patient who passed away during treatment at Shaheed Hospital 3 years ago. The relatives alleged that the patient died due to medical negligence and the deficiency of the doctors. The family submitted a letter to the Health Minister requesting him to initiate an investigation into the matter.

According to the daily, the patient was admitted to Shaheed Hospital for treatment on 12 December 2019. After taking him out of the operation theatre, the doctors informed the patient's family that he would regain consciousness after some time. However, the patient did eventually pass away.

Council's Action

Acting on the complaint of the family, the council held a meeting on 16.06.22 and found the accused doctor guilty of negligence on the ground that he did not have the necessary qualification to perform anaesthesia, yet he treated the patient.

Hence, the council took action under the Indian Medical Council, (Professional Conduct, Etiquette, and Ethics) Regulation 2002 Act and suspended the registration of the doctor for three months.

Family's Response

As per a recent media report by Jagran, the family members of the deceased approached Health Minister Shiromani Mathur and demanded strict action against two doctors involved in handling the patient. The father of the deceased claimed that his son was stable before the operation. Due to the wrong treatment provided by the two accused doctors, his condition deteriorated after the operation and he eventually passed away, they said.

The council has also suspended the registration of another doctor involved in the case as he also treated the patient in a discipline despite not having the necessary qualification in that particular field, adds the daily.
