Gurugram: License of the Pharmacies of two major hospitals in the city, namely Medanta as well as Artemis Hospital are reported to have been suspended, after the authorities found them in violation under the Drug and Cosmetic Rules, 1945.

A raid in this regard was conducted by the Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) of Haryana government on October 27, on the premier hospitals at Gurugram including Medanta, Artemis and Fortis. During the raid, the pharmacies attached to these hospitals were found to be lacking in transparency and maintenance of records under Drug and Cosmetic Rules, 1945. In particular, discrepancies were found under the section 65 of the said rules that pertain to the Condition of licences.

The Haryana FDA then issued notices to these hospital pharmacies on November 4, 2016 asking for explanation. Millenium Post adds that the private hospitals failed to respond with satisfactory replies as to why their pharmacies were not conforming to the rules of the act.
“During our raids on October 27 we found that these Private hospitals were not transparent in the specifying the drugs. After the initial inquiry, we had issued them notices. As we have found the reply of Medanta and Artemis was not satisfactory, the decision was taken to suspend their licenses for certain days as penalty. We have also issued warning to other major private hospitals to be fair and transparent in their dealings,” Amandeep Chauhan, Senior Drug Inspector in Gurugram. The licences of the pharmacies have been suspended for a period of three days, adds Dainik bhaskar


The pharmacies of the said hospitals were found not to be maintaining a proper data base . Some of the discrepancies found include:


Serial number of entries of the medicinal drugs issued.

Date of supply of the drugs.

Names and addresses of the patients the drugs were issued to.

Name of prescriber of the drugs.

Batch numbers and date of expiry date of the drugs.


The drug inspector also informed that regular raids will also be carried in the future so as to ensure compliance with rules and regulations for pharmacies across the city.
