Masina Hospital To Get Revamp At Cost Of Rs 22 Crores

Mumbai: In a move to provide better healthcare facilities to the patients, the 120-year-old Masina Hospital will upgrade the patient facility at a cost of Rs 22 crores which is expected to be completed in the next two months.
The 270-bedded hospital which is considered Mumbai's second oldest healthcare facility located in Byculla has initially decided to get a makeover in order to preserve its historical look. However, the restoration project of the hospital is on hold for now, reports the HT.
In 1902 Dr. Hormasji Manekji Masina started a small hospital with four patients in a building at clare road, byculla. Within 5 years, two adjacent buildings were taken to accommodate over 100 patients.

The history of Hospitals in Bombay city reveals that Masina Hospital is among the first private Hospital established in 1902. Masina hospital and its vast 8-acres campus stand out as a green zone amid the concrete jungle that the city of Mumbai represents.
Masina Hospital is the only private health care institute which has worked and served the city during two pandemics, Spanish Flu in 1918 and Covid 19 today. The hospital has conquered these difficult times and provided quality care to one and all including Parsi Community.
In the history of Cardiac surgery in Mumbai, Masina Hospital is credited with surgery for Patient Ductus Arteriosus, the first cardiac surgery in the city of Mumbai. And on 10th December 2020, history was created when the first Heart Transplant Surgery was performed here on a very critical heart failure patient. The first open Mitral Valvotomy done in Bombay was performed at Masina Hospital.
Explaining more about the project, Dr Vispi Jokhi, chief executive officer, said "The focus is on upgrading the patient facility. Our hospital is one of the oldest Parsi Trust-owned hospitals and our focus is on affordable healthcare. While we want to have the restoration work done, our focus right now is on upgrading the health infrastructure only. We started with revamping our operation theatres last year amid the pandemic. This was followed by the upgradation of the wards. The Kharas Memorial Centre, which houses the main wards, and operation theatres, now have centralised air-conditioning, which was not there earlier."
Talking about the upgraded operation theatre, Dr Jokhi added "We now have suites, HEPA filters and laminar airflow for stringent infection control. But, the beds in the general ward and the beds in suites will have the same patient care. All the beds are connected via monitor to keep a check on vitals like ECG, heart rate, oxygen levels etc. We have also introduced day care centres."
Opening a new dialysis centre, Behram Khodaiji, joint CEO said "The work started last year and we intend to complete it in the next two months. We have introduced a 14-bed dialysis centre as well and have made a separate provision to attend to sero-positive patients to avoid spreading infection, if at all. The dialysis centre also has a private room, in case of a demand for the same,"
The restoration project will be headed by renowned vascular surgeon Dr Gustad Daver.
