Madhya Pradesh Ayurveda Colleges Expansion

With an aim to increase the number of BAMS seats from 600 to 1100, the Madhya Pradesh government has announced the establishment of 11 new Government Ayurveda Colleges in the recent assembly budget session. These new Ayurveda colleges will be established in 11 districts of MP namely:

• Sagar
• Narmadapuram
• Shahdol
• Dhar
• Jhabua
• Mandla
• Balaghat
• Morena
• Shujalpur
• Sheopur
• Khajuraho

According to TOI, the Madhya Pradesh AYUSH Directorate has instructed the AYUSH officers of these 11 districts to start the process of allotment of about 5 acres of land in their districts for the establishment of new Ayurveda colleges.

Similarly, AYUSH Commissioner Sonali Ponkshe Wayangankar has also sent a letter to all the 11 districts of MP to secure the required land for these new government Ayurveda colleges.

However, the establishment of these new Ayurveda colleges is expected to start in 2026 as it also requires approval from the state, university and National Commission for Indian Systems of Medicine (NCISM).

As per the Times Of India media report, AYUSH medical association, national spokesperson Dr Rakesh Pandey, said, “This initiative will provide affordable healthcare benefits to the people of the state and create employment opportunities for over 500 Ayurveda UG and PG doctors in the government sector”.

He further added, “The demand for new govt Ayurveda colleges has been a long-standing issue, with organizations like the Ayurveda Mahasammelan, AYUSH Medical Association, and the Private Ayurveda College Teachers Welfare Association advocating for them”.

Currently, there are total 7 government colleges in Bhopal, Gwalior, Rewa, Jabalpur, Ujjain, Indore and Burhanpur in Madhya Pradesh with a total of 600 seats for BAMS. On the other hand, there are a total of 18 private colleges in Ratlam, Sehore as well as Indore, Bhopal, Bhanpura and Jabalpur in which there are a total of 2000 seats for BAMS.
