Lucknow: Fulfilling the long-standing demands of King George's Medical University government doctors, the Uttar Pradesh government has decided to increase the doctors' salary at par with their counterparts in the Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGIMS).
The government order directing the same was issued by the medical education secretary, Mumtaz Ahmed Siddiqui, on Tuesday in the form of a Diwali bonanza for the KGMU staff. The decision was also officially announced by deputy chief minister Brajesh Pathak on Wednesday.

According to the directive, the arrear would be paid in four installments to the KGMU doctors, with the first two installments to be paid in the first year, and the remaining two to be paid in the new financial year, reports the Hindustan Times.
The doctors have been demanding the government make their pay package at par with the doctors at SGPGIMS for a long time now. The members of the KGMU Teachers' Association had recently met the deputy chief minister, following which the latter had directed the officials to resolve the problem at the earliest.
Currently, the pay scale of a KGMU professor is around Rs 1.5 - 2.3 lakh per month, which would be increased to Rs 1.6 - 2.2 lakh after the implementation of the government order, reports the Times of India. The basic salary would increase from Rs 8000 to Rs 13000 per month. The salary of the associate and assistant professors would also be raised. Every teacher would be receiving Rs 9.3 lakh as arrear.
The King George's Medical University in Uttar Pradesh's Lucknow accommodates around 1250 undergraduate students and 450 postgraduate students. It has more than 28 PG courses and 13 Doctoral courses and has 14 affiliated medical colleges, seven nursing colleges, and one paramedical college. There are nearly 500 doctors in KGMU who look after patients and train medical students.
Meanwhile, the government decision was welcomed by Dr. KK Singh, president of KGMU's teachers' association, and Dr Santosh Kumar, general secretary.
