Bengaluru: Bringing good news to the medical aspirants, new medical colleges might come up in Karnataka during the upcoming academic year as approval has been sought from the National Medical Commission (NMC) for starting two private and government medical colleges in the State.
These two medical colleges are likely to come up in Karnataka in addition to the existing colleges seeking an increase in the intake of undergraduate (UG) medical seats.
According to the data from the Directorate of Medical Education (DME), permission has been sought to start two new government medical colleges in the upcoming year. These colleges are proposed to come up un Ramanagara and Kanakpura, TOI has reported.

As per the latest media report by the Times of India, PES University, a deemed-to-be university has sought permission from the Apex Medical Regulatory to start its new medical college at its Electronic City campus. Commenting on the matter, a spokesperson at the university told TOI in this regard, "Our hospital has been functional for the past one year. We have applied for an intake of 100 students."
Apart from this, the directorate informed that a private institute- Adichunchunagiri University has also sought approval from NMC to start a college in Nagamangala.
These new medical colleges are likely to come up in Karnataka in addition to the existing colleges, which have requested for an increase of medical seats. These medical colleges include Sri Devaraj Urs Medical College, Kolar; MVJ Medical College and Research Hospital, Bengaluru; Kempegowda Institute of Medical Sciences, Bengaluru; the Oxford Medical College, Hospital & Research Centre, Bengaluru; Srinivas Institute of Medical Research Centre, Srinivasnagar, Mangaluru; Kanachur Institute of Medical Sciences, Mangaluru; AJ Institute of Medical Sciences & Research Centre, Mangaluru and Mysore Medical College and Research Institute (Govt Medical College), Mysuru. Most of these colleges have sought an increase of 50 medical seats each.
Earlier this year, Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya informed that India has a total number of 1,08,940 MBBS and 70,645 Postgraduate medical seats. Among these, the highest number of medical seats are in Karnataka. As per the data revealed by the Health Ministry, Karnataka had 11745 MBBS seats and the highest number i.e. 46 private medical colleges for the academic year 2023-2024.
Although earlier NMC had proposed 100 MBBS seats for every 10 lakh population, later this rule was put on hold, allowing States to have more medical colleges and increase medical seats at the existing medical colleges.
