New Delhi: In a life-threatening case, a cockroach was successfully removed from the stomach of a 23-year-old man at Fortis Hospital, Vasant Kunj.
The cockroach, 3 cms in size, was lying live in the patient’s small intestine. The team of doctors led by Dr Shubham Vatsya, Senior Consultant, Gastroenterology, Fortis Hospital Vasant Kunj assessed the case and removed the cockroach via a 10-minute endoscopy.
Upon admission to the hospital, the patient had complaints of pain in the abdomen and difficulty in digesting food for the last 2-3 days. The team of doctors led by Dr Shubham Vatsya, Senior Consultant, Gastroenterology, Fortis Vasant Kunj advised Upper Gastrointestinal (GI) Endoscopy - a procedure that examines the upper part of the GI tract to find out the cause of the abdominal pain and indigestion. Upon examination, a live cockroach was found in the patient's small intestine.

The team of doctors meticulously removed the cockroach through an endoscopic procedure that involves the use of an endoscope with two channels - one for air and water infusion and the other for air suction. They activated the suction button on the scope, effectively sucking the cockroach into the suction channel, leading to its removal from the body and saved the man’s life.
Giving details of the case, Dr Shubham Vatsya, Senior Consultant, Gastroenterology, Fortis Vasant Kunj said, “A live cockroach lying in the small intestine is a life-threatening situation, thus we immediately rushed into the process of removing the cockroach via an endoscopy procedure. The patient may have either swallowed the cockroach while eating food or the insect may have entered the patient's mouth while he was sleeping. Had the cockroach not been removed on time, it could have led to various fatal leading to infectious disorders.”
