New Delhi: Tragic Accident Claims Lives of Elderly Couple

A sloppy driver behind the wheels resulted in the death of an elderly doctor and his wife who were run over by a car when they were out on their evening stroll at Sector-11, Dwarka in southwest Delhi on Sunday evening.

The driver of the car, a 28-year-old woman who works in a multinational company, and lives in the same society as the deceased was arrested and later released on bail.

According to a recent media report in the Times of India, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Dwarka) Santosh Kumar Meena said that the elderly couple was identified as Shanti Swaroop Arora (72) and his wife Anjana Arora (62). They lived in Appu Enclave in Sector-11, Dwarka and their children are settled in the US.

The accident was captured in a CCTV camera installed at a mosque across the road. In an over 6 minutes video footage, the doctor couple can be seen taking a U-turn and going to the left side of the road when suddenly, a grey car moving at a slow speed hits them. The video shows the couple falls on the road and the car runs over them trapping the elderly man under the car while his wife is stuck in the back portion of the vehicle.

CCTV footage showed the woman stopping her car and stepping out and trying to help the couple, while the locals rushed towards the spot. The locals pulled out the couple after pushing the car away. The injured couple was rushed to a hospital where they succumbed to their injuries.

Witnesses told police that around 6.30 pm, the driver first hit them with her slow-moving Baleno car and then ran over them, leaving them trapped.

After the autopsy, the police handed over the bodies to their son who reached Delhi for the last rites of his parents.

The Times Of India report quoted DCP (Dwarka) Santosh Meena saying, "During initial questioning, Choudhary said her mind got diverted as she was thinking about something. She couldn't spot the elderly couple and hit them before she could control the vehicle. She didn't flee the spot and accompanied them to the hospital."

"A case under IPC sections 304A (causing death by negligence) and 279 (rash driving) has been registered against Choudhary at Dwarka South police station. She was arrested from the hospital and later released on bail. Her car has been seized," adds the report.
