Vijayawada: Additional MDS Seats Approved
Bringing good news to the postgraduate dental aspirants in Andhra Pradesh, the Dental Council of India (DCI) has given its permission for 15 additional MDS seats in five disciplines to Government Dental College, Vijayawada.
Issuing a letter to the principal of the GDCH, the Union Health Ministry (dental education) informed about sanctioning these 15 additional seats for the upcoming academic year 2023-2024.
Additional Seats Details
These seats include three seats each in the departments of:
- Orthodontia
- Prosthodontics
- Paedodontics
- Oral Medicine
- Oral Pathology
Specialty courses include:
- Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology and Oral Microbiology
- Oral Medicine and Radiology
- Prosthodontics and Crown & Bridge
- Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics
- Paediatric and Preventive Dentistry
Previously, the college had nine MDS seats including three each in the departments of Periodontia, Conservative Dentistry, and Oral Surgery since 2010.
Inspection and Approval
As per the latest media report by the New Indian Express, the nod from DCI has come after inspecting the facilities at the college back in September 2022. After inspection, the DCI officials expressed their satisfaction with the infrastructure of the college and gave their nod for 15 MDS seats to the college.
Reactions and Future Plans
Expressing happiness over the announcement, the principal of the dental college Dr. Kolasani Srinivasa Rao thanked the principal secretary of Health MT Krishna Babu and Director of Medical Education (DME) Dr. Vinod Kumar.
“On behalf of the government, the DME has promised to provide equipment, including dental chairs and machinery. Currently, we are treating 300 outpatients daily. With 15 more MDS seats being allocated, we will be able to treat 150 additional patients every day,” he said.
He also appreciated the services of the member of the Dental Council Dr. Mehboob Sheikh and Dr. Satish Kumar Reddy for their help in the entire process.
Dr. Mehaboob Shaik, YSRC Doctors Wing zonal in-charge of Krishna, Guntur, and NTR districts, also welcomed the sanction of additional seats and mentioned that with 24 PG seats available at the college, now more students of the State will be able to pursue specialization in the two government colleges of the State, instead of getting admitted in the private dental colleges, adds Deccan Chronicle.
YSR Congress Medical Wing president Dr. Ambati Naga Radhakrishna Yadav expressed thanks to the CM Jagan Mohan Reddy and mentioned that 50 percent of the additional PG dental seats will remain available for the economic and social development of BC, SC, ST, and minority students.
