Coimbatore Medical Conference Announcements

In a national conference inaugurated by Health Minister Ma Subramanian, announcements have been made that Coimbatore Medical College Hospital (CMCH) will get new equipment and facilities at a cost of Rs 36.60 crore.

New Facilities at CMCH

• Three hi-tech centres for genetic disorders to detect conditions such as Sickle cell anaemia, Duchenne muscular dystrophy, and Down syndrome. Estimated cost: Rs 2.73 crores.
• A new magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanner to reduce patient wait times. Currently, the hospital performs 25 MRI scans per day with one scanner.
• Additional facilities:
  • Paying ward at a cost of ₹1 crore
  • Emergency Care and Recovery Centre (ECRC) at a cost of ₹53 lakh
  • Dialysis unit and new equipment worth ₹13 lakh

Other Announcements

The minister announced that Government Medical College and ESI Hospital will get an Accident and Emergency Centre at a cost of Rs 34.5 lakhs, reports The Hindu.

Organ Transplantation Efforts

Subramanian also said at the conference that the government is taking necessary steps to improve the organ transplantation procedure in government hospitals in the state, which was hampered due to the pandemic. Electricity Minister V. Senthil Balaji was also present.

While addressing the situation, he told TNIE, "Many patients are on the waiting list to get vital organs from donors. Currently, the State has a total of 6,483 people waiting for a kidney transplant, 380 for liver, 43 people for heart, and 42 people for a lung transplant."

"In order to give a new lease of life to these people on the waiting list, we have expedited the organ transplant procedures. As many as 479 vital organs were harvested from 114 brain-dead persons in government facilities, giving a new lease of life to 588 people under the Chief Minister's comprehensive health insurance scheme (CMCHIS) in the past 14 months," he said, adding, a total of 5,557 vital organs have been harvested so far from 1,524 brain-dead persons across the state from 2008 to July 2022.

Recognition and Awards

A release from the hospital said the programme was organised to honour families of organ donors. Ranking first in solid organ transplantation, Tamil Nadu has also received the best State award in cadaver organ donation for five years in a row.
