Caretaker allegedly steals Rs 2.9 lakh gold from Trichy doctor

Trichy:In a shocking incident, a doctor in Trichy was defrauded by his caretaker, who allegedly stole gold jewellery worth Rs 2.9 lakh from his home. According to the news reports, Dr. P. Balaji, who works at a private medical college in the city, had employed the 28-year-old caretaker, a resident of Ranjit Nagar, around three months ago to look after his ailing father. The arrangement reportedly continued smoothly until late October, when the doctor’s family noticed that several pieces of jewellery had gone missing from their home. Following this, the doctor lodged a complaint with the local police. Upon questioning, the caretaker allegedly confessed to stealing the jewellery from the locker. He was subsequently arrested and produced before a magistrate, who remanded him to judicial custody. The incident has raised concerns about the need for background verification when employing domestic or caregiving staff. The incident came to light when a jewellery shop owner at Khaira alerted the police about a man who tried to sell gold and diamond ornaments, an officer said. According to the police, the theft came to light when the owner of a jewellery shop in Khaira informed them about a man attempting to sell gold and diamond ornaments.
