Advisor To Governor Pays Surprise Visit To GMC Hospital In Jammu

K Vijay Kumar, the advisor to Jammu and Kashmir Governor N N Vohra, paid a surprise visit to the Government Medical College hospital here and took stock of the medical facilities.

Accompanied by senior civil and police officials, Kumar inspected the emergency ward and in-patient units of the hospital, an official spokesman said.

He also inspected the OPD and was briefed by the principal and medical superintendent about the availability of patient care facilities, the spokesman said. During his visit, the advisor interacted with many patients admitted in the hospital and their attendants and enquired about the medical facilities being provided to them.

He directed the health department's officials to take necessary measures for improving sanitation and patient care services at the hospital, the spokesman said.

Earlier, the advisor chaired a high-level meeting to review the progress on implementation of key flagship schemes and programmes and the overall developmental scenario in Jammu district.

Deputy Commissioner of Jammu Ramesh Kumar gave an overview of the ongoing developmental projects in the district under various sectors.

The advisor reviewed the pace of progress on:

  • Upcoming legislative complex
  • Modernisation of general bus stand
  • Development of multi-tier parking
  • Jammu ropeway project
  • Jammu-Akhnoor road four-laning
  • Jammu-ring road project
  • Extension of Jammu airport
  • IIT, IIM and sewerage project

Taking stock of the availability of doctors, medical staff, medical supplies, and critical care ambulances in the district, the meeting was informed that Jammu district has a shortfall of 36 doctors while two critical ambulances are available -- one each at Jammu and R S Pura.

On the drug menace, Kumar asked the police department to utilise the services of NGOs for spreading mass awareness against drug abuse and take suggestions and recommendations from the police departments doing a good job in curbing the problem in their respective states.

Meanwhile, several delegations from Jammu including:

  • National Newspapers Representatives' Association
  • Confederation of Indian Industries
  • Chamber of Commerce and Industries
  • Border Sangarsh Samiti-Arnia
  • JK Against Corruption Trust
  • Various public delegations

also met the advisor and put forth their issues. He assured that prompt and effective action would be taken up on the genuine issues raised by them, the spokesman said.
