Kolkata: In an unfortunate incident, a female junior doctor working at the R G Kar Medical College and Hospital allegedly committed suicide by jumping off the nine-storey emergency building recently. The medico was on medication for psychiatric conditions, hence, depression is being cited as the reason for the suicide, however not confirmed, as the police officials did not find any suicide note.

The deceased junior doctor has been identified as a 25-year-old PG medical student, Dr. Poulami Saha, pursuing her second-year of Paediatrics course at the institute. She was deployed at the fever clinic of the hospital, where patients with COVID-19 symptoms are screened and then sent for swab tests.

The tragic incident reportedly took place on May 1st around 11 am just before the doctor's shift. According to eyewitnesses, they had heard a loud thud near the emergency building.

Doctors, nurses, and other employees of the hospital rushed to the spot and saw the doctor lying in a pool of blood. She was immediately rushed to the emergency department, where the doctors declared her dead.

Informing the Telegraph about the incident, a police officer said, "Primarily, we have learnt that the doctor had jumped from the roof of the nine-storey emergency building of the medical college and hospital." No suicide note has been found.

Certain sources informed The Indian Express that the medico was suffering from depression and she was on medication.

"It seems that she committed suicide by jumping from the hospital building. The body has been sent for postmortem. We have learnt that she was suffering from depression for last few days. We have started an investigation into the matter," said a senior officer of Kolkata Police.
